Free things to do in Chicago in winter

Official sources checked Oct 4, 2026

December to February is hard: below freezing most days, with wind off the lake that makes the Lakefront Trail a punishment. The free list shrinks to indoor places, and there are enough of them. The Cultural Center, the conservatory, the Mexican art museum and the zoo, which stays open and empty, fill two days. Holiday lights go up in late November and stay until early January.
