Free museums in Chicago, and when

Official sources checked Oct 4, 2026

Free days at the Art Institute, Field Museum and Shedd Aquarium exist, but only for Illinois residents with proof of address, and the dates are published a season at a time. Tourists get nothing from them. What anyone can use: the National Museum of Mexican Art, the Smart Museum, MoCP, DePaul Art Museum and the Newberry are free every open day. The ISAC Museum in Hyde Park began charging in September 2026 and is now free only on Fridays from 4 to 8 pm.
