Free things to do in Washington DC

Official sources checked Oct 4, 202627 always free · 1 free on certain days · 1 tip-based tours

Washington is the easiest capital in the world to visit without paying for a ticket. The Smithsonian museums, the National Gallery of Art, the Capitol tour, the Library of Congress, the National Archives and every memorial on the Mall charge nothing, every day they are open. The catch is not money, it is planning. A handful of the most popular places hand out free timed passes that run out, and federal buildings close on days you would not expect. Most museums shut at 5:30 pm, so the memorials, which never close, are for the evening. Distances on the Mall are also longer than they look: Capitol to Lincoln Memorial is 2 miles.

Before you go

  • Book the timed passes first and build the trip around them: Air and Space releases a whole month at noon ET on the first of the month two months ahead, the African American History museum and the Library of Congress 30 days ahead.
  • Every federal museum has airport-style security, so carry a small bag, and note the Capitol does not allow food or drinks inside.
  • Do museums from 10 am to 5:30 pm and memorials after dinner, since they are open and lit all night with rangers on duty until 10 pm.

Questions people ask

Are all Smithsonian museums in Washington free?

Yes. Every Smithsonian museum in Washington and the National Zoo have free admission, and most are open daily from 10 am to 5:30 pm except December 25. Only the Air and Space Museum, the African American History and Culture museum and the Zoo require a free pass booked in advance.

How do I get same-day passes for the African American History museum?

Same-day timed-entry passes are released online only, by 8:15 am ET each day, and go within minutes on busy days. Advance passes open 30 days ahead on a rolling basis. One person can book up to nine.

When are Air and Space Museum passes released?

At noon ET on the first of each month for the month two months ahead, so December passes open on October 1. If your date shows as unavailable, check again, because the museum adds passes later.

Is the Kennedy Center still offering free shows?

Yes. As of October 2026 free Millennium Stage performances run at 6 pm on select days, mostly Thursday to Saturday, in the REACH pavilions next to the main building. No ticket is needed.

What happens to free attractions during a government shutdown?

The Smithsonian museums, the Zoo, the National Gallery, the Archives and Capitol tours can close, as they did for several weeks in October and November 2025. The outdoor memorials on the Mall stay accessible. Check si.edu before you travel if a budget deadline is close.
