Free things to do in Washington DC in summer

June to August is hot and humid, often above 90°F, with thunderstorms most afternoons. Do memorials before 10 am or after dark and spend midday in the air-conditioned museums, which are all free. Evenings are the reward: outdoor concerts and military parades cost nothing. The Zoo stays open to 6 pm, and the Mall is packed around July 4.

Worth it? Yes.The Vietnam wall is the one that stays with you, and the Korean memorial is far better at night when the nineteen soldiers are lit from below. Walk them in a loop with the Lincoln Memorial in the middle.

Worth it? Yes.You cannot see the historic rooms without the tour, so do it. The tour skips the House and Senate galleries. Book the first slot of the day, security lines grow fast after 10 am, and read the prohibited items list (no food, no water bottles with liquid).

Washington's own house and farm on the Potomac, 15 miles south of the city, with the mansion rooms, the tomb and the quarters of the people he enslaved. It is privately run, so it charges admission and stays open during federal shutdowns. Nothing free in the city gives you a preserved 18th-century plantation, and it fills a full day.
