Lincoln Park in the morning, the Loop in the afternoon, the river at dusk. It works Wednesday to Sunday, when the conservatory is open. The only money you need is for transit and food.

    Lincoln Park Zoo

    Take bus 151 from Michigan Ave to Stockton & Webster. Walk the outdoor habitats first, the buildings open at 10 am.

    How to get there
    Bus 151 or 156 from downtown to Stockton & Webster. Parking on site costs $35–$45, so do not drive.
    Worth it? Yes.Good enough that people would pay for it. Arrive at 10 am when the buildings open, start with the Regenstein ape house, and walk the Nature Boardwalk on the south side for the skyline over the pond.

    Lincoln Park Conservatory

    Leave the zoo by the west gate with your timed ticket already booked. Afterward walk east through the park toward the lake, about 20 minutes.

    Bus 151 or 156 to Stockton & Webster, then a 3-minute walk north. It sits just outside the zoo's west gate.
    Worth it? Yes.Small, warm and worth it in winter when the lakefront is brutal. Book the slot on your phone while you are still in the zoo.

    North Avenue Beach

    Cross the footbridge over the Drive and walk out on the pier at the south end for the skyline. Then pick up bus 151 southbound on Lake Shore Drive at North Ave.

    Bus 151 to North Ave or bus 72 to its last stop, then the pedestrian bridge over DuSable Lake Shore Drive. About 20 minutes on foot from the zoo.
    Worth it? Yes.Out of season you come for the view, not the water. Walk out on the concrete pier at the south end and look back at the city.

    Chicago Cultural Center

    Get off at Michigan & Washington. See the Tiffany dome on the third floor, then cross to the Randolph side for the second dome. Millennium Park is across Michigan Ave.

    How to get there
    L to Washington/Wabash and walk one block east. Enter on Washington St for the Tiffany dome, on Randolph St for the G.A.R. rooms.
    Worth it? Yes.The best free interior in the city, and it is across the street from Millennium Park. Take the Washington St staircase up to the third floor first, the dome is right there.

    Millennium Park

    The Bean, the Crown Fountain, then south to Lurie Garden. Cross the BP Pedestrian Bridge on the east side.

    How to get there
    L to Washington/Wabash (Brown, Green, Orange, Pink, Purple), then one block east. Red Line to Lake, Blue Line to Washington.
    Worth it? Yes.Go before 8 am if you want the Bean without a crowd in the reflection. Then walk south to Lurie Garden, which most people miss and which has the better skyline view.

    Maggie Daley Park

    The bridge drops you into the park. Walk through it, then head north on Columbus Dr to the river, 10 minutes.

    How to get there
    Cross the curving BP Pedestrian Bridge from Millennium Park. It lands right in the park.
    Worth it? Depends.With kids this beats the Bean. Without kids, cross the BP bridge anyway for the view, then keep walking to the lake.

    Chicago Riverwalk

    Go down the stairs at Columbus Dr and walk west toward Lake St as the lights come on. The L at Clark/Lake is two blocks from the western end.

    How to get there
    L to State/Lake or Clark/Lake, walk north to Wacker Drive and take any staircase down. Ramps at State St and at Franklin St.
    Worth it? Yes.This is the free version of the architecture cruise. Walk it west to east in late afternoon so the sun lights the north bank buildings, and skip the riverside bars, which are priced for the view.
