L to Washington/Wabash and walk one block east. Enter on Washington St for the Tiffany dome, on Randolph St for the G.A.R. rooms.
Worth it? Yes.The best free interior in the city, and it is across the street from Millennium Park. Take the Washington St staircase up to the third floor first, the dome is right there.
One of the largest collections of Mexican art in the country, from pre-Hispanic pieces to contemporary Chicano work, in the middle of Chicago's Mexican neighborhood.

Pink Line to Damen or 18th. From 18th station, walk west along 18th St past the murals, about 12 minutes.
Worth it? Yes.Always free, never crowded, and the Day of the Dead show each fall is the best exhibition in town for the price of nothing. Eat on 18th St afterward.
Red Line to Chicago, then 5 minutes north to 60 W. Walton St, facing Washington Square Park.
Worth it? Yes.The shows are small and well made, usually about Chicago or about maps. Good on a Tuesday to Thursday evening, when little else free is open.

Worth it? Depends.A quick stop, not a destination. It is one of the few museums open and free on a Monday, and it pairs well with a walk through Grant Park.
Red, Brown or Purple Line to Fullerton. The museum is next to the station at 935 W. Fullerton Ave.
Worth it? Depends.Go only if the current show interests you, there is no permanent display to fall back on. It is ten seconds from the L platform, so it costs you nothing to look.

Worth it? Depends.Three hours is tight for this museum, so go straight to the second-floor Impressionists and then the Modern Wing. Visitors from out of state should just pay, it is worth the ticket.

Chicago Architecture Center river cruise
A docent spends 90 minutes explaining more than 50 buildings from the middle of the river, an angle the Riverwalk cannot give you. You can walk the same water for free, but you will not know what you are looking at. Take a late afternoon departure.
