Free things to do in Rome in winter

December to February is cool, around 12°C by day, with the shortest queues of the year outside Christmas week. St Peter's is walk-in by mid morning in January. Parks and ruins close by 16:30, so plan outdoors first and churches after 16:00. From late November to 6 January the trees and lights are up, and New Year's Eve has a free concert.

Worth it? Yes.Be in the security line by 7:30 and you walk straight in. By 10:00 the queue wraps around the colonnade and can take over an hour. Shoulders and knees must be covered.

Worth it? Yes.Far quieter than the Colosseum on the same free Sunday and it gives a better sense of how big imperial buildings were. There is little shade, so skip midday in summer.

A multi-storey Roman complex of shops and offices cut into the Quirinal hill, now the museum of the Imperial Fora. You walk the ancient street, Via Biberatica, and look out over Trajan's Forum from the upper terraces.

How to get there
Metro A to Ottaviano or Cipro, then 7 minutes on foot to the entrance on Viale Vaticano
Worth it? Depends.It works, but you pay in time. Arrive by 7:30 or expect a two-hour queue, and know that the rooms are packed and close early. If the Sistine Chapel is your one big thing in Rome, a paid weekday slot is a calmer visit.
