Free museums in Rome, and when

Official sources checked Oct 4, 2026

Three rules cover almost everything. State sites such as the Colosseum, Castel Sant'Angelo and Palazzo Barberini are free for everyone on the first Sunday of the month, with tickets handed out on the day. City museums, the Capitoline included, are also free for all on first Sundays, and free all year only for Rome residents. The Vatican Museums open free on the last Sunday, mornings only. The Borghese Gallery still charges a €2 booking fee on its free Sunday, so it is not listed here.
