June to August is dry and mild, around 25°C by day, with the clearest skies of the year. Locals think the sea is cold; visitors from the north will swim happily. It is the season for viewpoints: Vista Chinesa, Parque Glória Maria and the Morro da Urca trail. The sun sets by 17:30, so plan the Arpoador or Urca wall early.

Worth it? Yes.The one free ritual every visitor should do once. From roughly October to February the sun sets over the sea beside the peaks, and in winter it goes down behind the hills instead. Leave with the crowd, not after it.

Worth it? Yes.Walk it rather than lie on it. Start at Leme, the quiet end, and go the full length to Posto 6, where fishermen still land their boats in the morning. After dark, keep to the lit promenade and off the sand.

Worth it? Yes.Half of the Sugarloaf view for nothing. It is short but steep and slippery after rain, so wear real shoes. Walking back down is free. Riding the cable car, up to the Sugarloaf or down to the beach, means buying a ticket at the top.

Worth it? Depends.A great view that is awkward without wheels: a long, steep paved climb through forest. The road is isolated, so walk it in daylight with other people around, ideally on a weekend morning when cyclists fill it.
