Free things to do in Rio de Janeiro in summer

Official sources checked Oct 5, 2026

December to February is hot, humid and crowded, with afternoon storms that pass in an hour. Beaches are at their fullest and the free calendar peaks: New Year's Eve fireworks on Copacabana, the Iemanjá festival at Arpoador and weeks of street Carnival. Do outdoor things before 10:00, museums with air conditioning at midday, and the Arpoador rock at sunset.
