Norman Foster's glass dome sits on top of the German parliament, with a spiral ramp that climbs 230 metres above the debating chamber. Entry is free, but only with a registration in your name.

Register on the Bundestag website with full name and date of birth. If slots are left, the service centre by the Reichstag issues same-day or next-day places, at least 2 hours before the visit. Bring the original ID, copies are refused.

How to get there
S+U Brandenburger Tor (S1, S2, S25, S26, U5), 5 minutes on foot. U5 Bundestag is even closer. Bus 100 stops at Reichstag/Bundestag.
Worth it? Yes.The best free view in Berlin and the booking is the only hard part. Take a slot about 45 minutes before sunset and pick up the free audio guide, which starts talking by itself as you walk up the ramp.

A documentation centre on the ground where the Gestapo, the SS and the Reich Security Main Office had their headquarters. Outside, a trench exhibition runs below one of the longest surviving stretches of the Wall in the city centre.

How to get there
U6 to Kochstraße/Checkpoint Charlie, or S1, S2, S25 to Anhalter Bahnhof, each about 6 minutes on foot. From Potsdamer Platz it is a 10 minute walk.
Worth it? Yes.Free, open every day until 20:00 and better than most paid history museums in town. It is heavy on text and photographs, so pick the outdoor trench first and give the indoor exhibition an hour.

Every Wednesday at 13:00, musicians from the Berliner Philharmoniker and guests play 40 to 50 minutes of chamber music in the foyer of the main hall. No ticket, no charge.

How to get there
Bus 200 to Philharmonie, or M48, M85 to Kulturforum. S+U Potsdamer Platz is a 10 minute walk.
Worth it? Yes.World-class players for nothing, in one of the great concert buildings. Be at the door by 12:15. You stand or sit on the stairs, folding chairs are not allowed, so the staircase landings with a rail to lean on go first.

The glass pavilion where East Germans said goodbye to visitors going back west. The exhibition keeps the original passport control booths and tells the story through the people who passed or were turned away.

S+U Friedrichstraße (S1, S2, S3, S5, S7, S9, U6). The pavilion is on the river side of the station, at Reichstagufer 17.
Worth it? Yes.Small, free and well done, and right at a station you will use anyway. Step into the control booth and close the door behind you. It is narrower than you expect.

A free museum about how we might live in 20 or 50 years, with three big sections on people, nature and technology, plus a hands-on lab in the basement. The roof has a walkway with a view over the Spree and the government quarter.

Worth it? Yes.The best free rainy-day stop with children over eight. Get the wristband at the entrance, which saves your choices as you go, and do not skip the lab downstairs. Adults without kids can do it in an hour.

U1, U3, U6 to Hallesches Tor or U6 to Kochstraße, each about 8 minutes on foot. Bus 248 stops at Jüdisches Museum.
Worth it? Yes.One of the big museums of Europe, and free. The architecture does half the work: go down to the three underground axes first, stand in the Holocaust Tower with the door shut, then climb to the exhibition. Allow more time than you planned.

The army headquarters where Stauffenberg and his fellow officers planned the 20 July 1944 coup, and where four of them were shot that night in the courtyard. The exhibition upstairs covers resistance to the Nazis from every direction, not only the military.

How to get there
Bus M29 stops at the door (Gedenkstätte Deutscher Widerstand). From S+U Potsdamer Platz it is a 10 minute walk.
Worth it? Yes.Quiet, serious and almost empty on weekdays. Start in the courtyard at the bronze figure, then go up to Stauffenberg's office. The free audio guide comes in seven languages and is worth taking, since the wall texts are dense.

The story of the American, British and French forces in West Berlin, told in a former US Army cinema and library. The big objects sit outside: a British transport plane from the Airlift and the last guardhouse from Checkpoint Charlie.

U3 to Oskar-Helene-Heim, then 10 minutes on foot along Clayallee. Buses 115 and X83 stop at the museum.
Worth it? Yes.The Checkpoint Charlie hut in the city centre is a copy. The real one is here, in a quiet suburb with no crowd around it. It is a 35 minute ride from Mitte, so pair it with a walk in the Grunewald.

The lakeside villa where 15 senior Nazi officials met on 20 January 1942 to organise the murder of Europe's Jews. The exhibition is built around the meeting's minutes, in the rooms where it took place.

S1 or S7 to Wannsee, then bus 114 to Haus der Wannsee-Konferenz. About 50 minutes from Mitte in total.
Worth it? Yes.The gap between the pretty garden on the lake and what was agreed over lunch is the point. It takes half a day with the journey, so go when you have time, and walk down to the water afterwards.

A free museum for street art and graffiti, under the elevated U-Bahn on Bülowstraße. The building facade is repainted by a new artist with every show, and murals continue along the surrounding blocks.

U2 to Bülowstraße, the museum is 2 minutes west at Bülowstraße 7. U1, U3, U4 to Nollendorfplatz is 5 minutes away.
Worth it? Yes.Small, so do not cross town for it alone. It works as the indoor half of a walk: look at the murals along Bülowstraße from the pavement, then go in. Open until 20:00 from Thursday to Sunday.

Worth it? Depends.A free answer to the paid DDR Museum by the cathedral, with fewer buttons to press and more real objects. Until the permanent rooms reopen in December 2026, come only if you are already in Prenzlauer Berg.

Worth it? Depends.Worth half an hour for the cellar, where you walk through the foundations of the palace that East Germany blew up in 1950. Skip it if you expected the ethnological collection for free. That ended, and it is now €9.
