Worth it? Yes.Go on a dry afternoon and walk the outside of the big hangars, where the painted walls are. In winter the wind off the IJ is sharp and half the terraces are shut.

You do not need a ticket to walk the formal gardens around the Rijksmuseum, with their sculptures, fountains and bits of old city gates. The vaulted passage under the building is a public cycle route and never closes.

Worth it? Yes.The best free 40 minutes near Museumplein. Each summer the museum puts a sculpture show in the gardens. Buskers play under the passage vaults most afternoons, and the sound carries well.

The city archive sits in De Bazel, a huge brick former bank from the 1920s. Down in the old safe-deposit vault, the Treasury shows original documents, maps and photos from 750 years of Amsterdam, free.

Worth it? Yes.The best free indoor stop in the centre and almost nobody knows it. Go for the vault doors and the tiled bank hall as much as the papers. There is a walk-in building tour on Sundays at 14:00, which you reserve.

Worth it? Yes.Walk in from the Stadhouderskade gate and keep right of the cycle lane, the bikes do not slow down. The rose garden in the middle has more than 70 kinds and is at its best in June.

The sloping green-copper science museum has a public square on its roof. You climb a wide outdoor staircase to a planted terrace with a view across the harbour and the old centre. The museum below is paid, the roof is not.

Worth it? Yes.The best free view in central Amsterdam, and far less known than the paid towers. It closes at 17:30, so it is not a sunset spot outside winter. Bring a sandwich and sit on the steps.

Worth it? Yes.Start on Brouwersgracht and zigzag south between Prinsengracht and Lijnbaansgracht. Stay off Prinsengracht itself near the Anne Frank House, where the queue blocks the pavement.
