Amsterdam tap water is safe to drink everywhere, and it is good. Fill a bottle at your hostel sink, in museum toilets or at the public taps in the larger parks instead of buying bottled water.

Haarlemmerplein

A small, mostly organic weekly market where the cheese and bread farmers hand out tastes and like to explain what they make. Ask before you help yourself, and buy something small if you eat a lot.

Albert Cuyp Market, De Pijp

A hand-sized syrup waffle pressed and filled at the food truck while you wait, eaten hot and bending in the middle. The family has baked on this market since 1978. The chocolate version is €4.

Nine Streets and the centre

Fresh-cut Dutch fries fried to order, €3.95 for a medium cone with no sauce. One sauce adds €1, and fries with mayonnaise are €4.95. The Parmesan and truffle mayo version everyone photographs is €7.15.

Daily. The queue at the Runstraat shop is long by lunchtime, so go before noon or use the Nieuwendijk or Oude Hoogstraat branch
