Once a week the Concertgebouw gives away a 30-minute concert. Most are chamber music or young ensembles in the Recital Hall. A few are open rehearsals of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in the Main Hall.

Free when: One concert a week, 12:30–13:00, usually on a Wednesday and sometimes a Tuesday or Thursday. None in July and August
Free for whom: Everyone with a free ticket. A few concerts are aimed at children aged 6 and up
Reservation: Required. Free tickets go online up to one week before each concert, two per person, and the orchestra rehearsals disappear within minutes
Time needed: 30 min
How to get there: Tram 2, 5 or 12 to Museumplein, or tram 3, 5 or 12 to Concertgebouw

Worth it? Yes.The only free way into one of the world's great concert halls. Check the calendar, note the exact release time for your date and be online at that minute. Aim for a Main Hall date if you can.

Rijksmuseum for under-19s

The national museum of Rembrandt and Vermeer charges adults €25 and lets in everyone aged 18 or under for nothing, every day of the year. That includes visiting teenagers, whatever their nationality.

Worth it? Yes.A family of two adults and two teenagers saves €50 here. Book the 09:00 slot, go straight to the Gallery of Honour on the second floor, and you get the Night Watch before the tour groups do.

Van Gogh Museum for under-18s

The world's largest Van Gogh collection, shown in order of his life from the dark Dutch years to the last wheatfields. Adults pay €25. Visitors under 18 get in free.

Worth it? Yes.Slots sell out days ahead in every season, and the free child tickets come out of the same pool. Book as soon as you know your dates and take the first or the last hour.
