The city archive sits in De Bazel, a huge brick former bank from the 1920s. Down in the old safe-deposit vault, the Treasury shows original documents, maps and photos from 750 years of Amsterdam, free.

Worth it? Yes.The best free indoor stop in the centre and almost nobody knows it. Go for the vault doors and the tiled bank hall as much as the papers. There is a walk-in building tour on Sundays at 14:00, which you reserve.

The central public library, the largest in the Netherlands, with seven floors of reading space anyone can use. The top floor has a restaurant terrace looking over the old centre.

10 minutes on foot east from Centraal Station along Oosterdokskade
Worth it? Yes.The best rainy-day refuge near the station: warm, free toilets, places to sit and charge a phone. Ride the escalators to floor 7 and walk out to the terrace. You do not have to buy anything to look.

A small museum and library about chess and about Max Euwe, the Amsterdam maths teacher who became world champion in 1935. Outside on the square, people play on a giant board.

Worth it? Yes.A niche stop, and a good one if you play. Staff are volunteers who like to talk. If chess means nothing to you, watch a game on the outdoor board and move on.

Bimhuis is the country's main jazz club, a black box hanging off the Muziekgebouw over the IJ. On Tuesday nights the cafe hosts a jam session led by saxophonist Jasper Blom, with conservatory students and visiting professionals sitting in.

  • Players swap in and out after the opening set

Worth it? Yes.The best free night out in Amsterdam for anyone who likes live music. Nobody checks whether you buy a drink, but a beer here costs normal bar money. Get there by 21:45 for a seat.

The white, angular film museum across the water from Centraal. You can walk into the building, climb the wooden arena steps and use the small film installations on the stairs without a ticket. The exhibitions and the permanent display downstairs are paid.

  • Audio benches at the top of the stairs play five-minute film stories
  • Stop-motion animation tables on the stairs to Cinema 1

Free ferry F3 from behind Centraal Station to Buiksloterweg, then 5 minutes on foot along the water
Worth it? Depends.Worth it as part of a ferry trip, not as a trip of its own. Since the permanent exhibition went behind the ticket desk, the free part is the architecture and the view from the arena steps.

A houseboat on the Singel that has been a cat shelter since the 1960s, the only floating one there is. For two hours on three afternoons a week, visitors can step aboard and meet the residents.

Once a week the Concertgebouw gives away a 30-minute concert. Most are chamber music or young ensembles in the Recital Hall. A few are open rehearsals of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in the Main Hall.

The national museum of Rembrandt and Vermeer charges adults €25 and lets in everyone aged 18 or under for nothing, every day of the year. That includes visiting teenagers, whatever their nationality.
