December to February is cold, dry and usually sunny, with frost at night and around 10°C by day. It is museum season: every indoor free slot runs as normal and lines at the Prado are shorter in January and February. Parks close earlier and El Capricho shuts at 18:30. Christmas lights go on in late November and stay until 6 January.

Worth it? Yes.Enter by the Puerta de Felipe IV behind the Prado and walk up through the Parterre to the lake. The Palacio de Cristal is closed for restoration, so the glass is behind scaffolding for now. The rose garden peaks in May.

Worth it? Yes.The only place in Madrid to see Goya frescoes where he painted them, and it is often empty. Use the mirrors set out on the floor to study the dome without craning. Of the two matching chapels, it is the one on the right.

Worth it? Yes.The weekly change is brief and low-key, so catch it in passing. The first-Wednesday version is a real parade with a band. For that one, enter by the Puerta de Santiago on Calle de Bailén by 11:30 to get a spot at the rail.
