Free things to do in Madrid in the fall

September to November brings the weather back to walking temperature and the cultural calendar back to full. From October the palace's free slot moves to 16:00–18:00 and Retiro closes at 22:00. 12 October, the national day, opens state museums free to everyone. Mid-October has a week of free heritage visits, and Retiro and the Botanical Garden turn yellow in November.

Worth it? Yes.Enter by the Puerta de Felipe IV behind the Prado and walk up through the Parterre to the lake. The Palacio de Cristal is closed for restoration, so the glass is behind scaffolding for now. The rose garden peaks in May.

A 2,200 year old Egyptian temple, given to Spain in 1968 for helping save Abu Simbel and rebuilt stone by stone on a hill west of Plaza de España. The terrace behind it faces the Royal Palace and the sunset.

Worth it? Yes.The inside is two small rooms with carved reliefs, fine if you booked and not worth an hour in line if you did not. The outside at sunset is the reason to come. Stand at the railing behind the temple, not in front of it.

Worth it? Yes.Come before 11:00, after that Ribera de Curtidores is shoulder to shoulder. Turn into Calle de Carlos Arniches and Plaza del General Vara del Rey for the second-hand stalls. Keep your phone in a front pocket.

Worth it? Yes.Look, do not sit. The terraces on Plaza Mayor charge double for average food. Leave by the Arco de Cuchilleros in the south-west corner, the steep stair is the best-looking exit.

Worth it? Yes.Walk it downstream from Príncipe Pío to Matadero, about 5 km and flat. With children, go straight to the slide hill by the Arganzuela footbridge. There is little shade, so in July do it after 19:00.

Worth it? Yes.The only place in Madrid to see Goya frescoes where he painted them, and it is often empty. Use the mirrors set out on the floor to study the dome without craning. Of the two matching chapels, it is the one on the right.

Worth it? Yes.The weekly change is brief and low-key, so catch it in passing. The first-Wednesday version is a real parade with a band. For that one, enter by the Puerta de Santiago on Calle de Bailén by 11:30 to get a spot at the rail.

Worth it? Yes.Worth the metro ride on a spring or autumn weekend. No food, no dogs, no bikes and no ball games are allowed in, so eat before you go. Arrive at opening on a sunny Sunday or you may queue at the gate for the capacity limit.

Worth it? Yes.Worth doing if you hold the right passport, and a waste of an afternoon if you do not, because staff check documents at the desk. Be in line 30 minutes before the free slot starts. With one hour inside, do the main staircase and Throne Room first.

The newest big museum in Madrid, opened in 2023 beside the palace, showing what the Habsburg and Bourbon kings collected: tapestries, carriages, Velázquez, Caravaggio. It runs the same nationality-based free slot as the palace, two hours later.

Worth it? Yes.The slot starts when the palace's winter one ends, so from October to March you can do both back to back. The building drops down the hillside in three floors of ramps. Start at the top with the Habsburgs.

Worth it? Yes.Ninety minutes is tight but workable because the rooms are quiet. The second floor has been shut since May 2026 until further notice, so ask at the desk what is open before you plan around a specific painting.

Worth it? Depends.Pleasant, not essential. Retiro is next door and free all day. Come for the tulips in late March and April or the autumn colour in November, and skip it in August when half the beds are resting. The city's own pages give both 13:00 and 13:30 as the end of the free slot, so be through the gate before 13:00.
