Montmartre funicular

Montmartre

A glass cabin that climbs the 36 metres from Place Saint-Pierre to the foot of Sacré-Cœur in about a minute and a half. It takes one ordinary Metro ticket.

Pay to ride up and walk down the stairs for free. The ticket gives no transfer to the Metro, so load a separate one if you arrive by line 2.

Bus 72 along the Seine

Right bank, Hôtel de Ville to Trocadéro

A city bus that follows the river quays past the Hôtel de Ville, the Louvre, Place de la Concorde and the Pont de l'Alma, with the Eiffel Tower across the water. One Bus-Tram ticket covers the whole ride.

Board at Hôtel de Ville heading west and sit on the left, the river side. It is the cheap answer to a sightseeing bus, and it is best after dark when the bridges are lit.

A swim at Piscine de la Butte-aux-Cailles

13th arrondissement

A 1924 brick and concrete pool hall with arched vaults, plus outdoor pools fed by a warm artesian well. It charges the standard city rate of €3.50, like most municipal pools.

Worth it on a grey day when you have had enough museums. A swim cap is compulsory and loose swim shorts are refused, so pack briefs; check the public hours first because school groups take many slots.

Parc de Bagatelle

Bois de Boulogne

A walled garden in the Bois de Boulogne with a rose garden of over a thousand varieties, a small château, grottoes and peacocks loose on the lawns. Entry costs €2.80 from April to September and nothing from October to March.

Pay in June, when the roses are at their peak, and come free for the autumn colour. It is a 15 minute walk from Pont de Neuilly on Metro 1, or bus 43 or 244 to the gates.

Grande Mosquée de Paris, courtyards and garden

Latin Quarter / Jardin des Plantes

The 1926 mosque opens its tiled patio, arcades and garden to visitors every day except Friday, 9:00 to 18:00. The prayer room is seen from the doorway only.

Half an hour of carved cedar, green tiles and fountains for the price of a coffee. Dress to cover shoulders and knees, and note it closes to visitors on Muslim holidays.
