This route is built for a Friday, when the Whitney is free from 5 pm. It runs from the harbor up the west side of Manhattan, with one detour over the bridge to Brooklyn. The only money you need is for transit and food.

  1. 9 am

    Staten Island Ferry

    Ride out on the right-hand side for the Statue of Liberty, get off at St. George and board the next boat back. From Whitehall Terminal, walk five minutes north through Battery Park to Bowling Green.

    How to get there
    Subway 1 to South Ferry, R/W to Whitehall St, or 4/5 to Bowling Green. Board at Whitehall Terminal.
    Worth it? Yes.Do it. Stand outside on the right-hand side leaving Manhattan for the statue, and go around 5 pm in fall or winter to come back with the skyline lit up. You have to get off at St. George and walk around to reboard.

    National Museum of the American Indian

    Give the rotunda and one exhibition 45 minutes. Then walk ten minutes up Broadway and turn left on Liberty Street.

    9/11 Memorial

    Walk around both pools. Afterwards head east on Vesey Street to City Hall Park, about ten minutes on foot.

    Brooklyn Bridge walk

    Enter at Centre Street, across from City Hall Park, and cross toward Brooklyn. At the far end take the stairs down to Washington Street and walk downhill to the water.

    How to get there
    Manhattan side: subway 4/5/6 to Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall, entrance at Centre Street across from City Hall Park. Brooklyn side: A/C to High St.
    Worth it? Yes.Go before 9 am or after dark. At midday the walkway is shoulder to shoulder and you spend the crossing dodging photo shoots. Walking from Brooklyn to Manhattan keeps the skyline in front of you.

    Brooklyn Bridge Park

    Eat your packed lunch on the Pier 1 lawn facing Lower Manhattan. Then walk up to High St station and take the C train to 23 St, and walk west to Tenth Avenue.

    How to get there
    Subway A/C to High St or F to York St, then a ten-minute walk downhill. Or walk off the Brooklyn Bridge.
    Worth it? Yes.The best free skyline view in the city. Sit on the Pier 1 lawn or the steps at Pebble Beach about an hour before sunset. Kids will want the Pier 6 playgrounds at the south end.

    The High Line

    Climb up at 23rd Street and walk south. The line ends at Gansevoort Street, right at the Whitney's front door.

    How to get there
    Subway A/C/E or L to 14 St/8 Av for the south end, or 7 to 34 St-Hudson Yards for the north end. Stairs and elevators at several cross streets.
    Worth it? Yes.Worth it, but weekend afternoons are a slow shuffle. Start at 34th Street on a weekday morning and walk south so you finish among the restaurants and the Whitney.

    Whitney Museum of American Art

    Free from 5 pm on Fridays. Take the elevator to the top floor and work down, using the outdoor terraces for the last light over the Hudson.
