Free things to do in Las Vegas in the fall

October and November bring back the walking weather, with highs dropping from the 80s to the 60s. October is the busiest free month: the Pride parade, an art festival in Summerlin and the Bellagio fall display. Timed entry returns to the Red Rock Scenic Drive on October 1, but the Overlook and Red Spring stay free. Ethel M starts charging for its garden in November.

Deuce bus to Bellagio, or Monorail to Flamingo/Caesars Palace station and a 10-minute walk. Bellagio charges for self-parking.
Worth it? Yes.Watch one in daylight and one after dark, they feel like different shows. The sidewalk railing near the center of the lake beats any paid patio, and the 15-minute evening cycle means you never wait long.

Walk through the Flamingo casino toward the pool, or enter from the LINQ Promenade side. Monorail to Flamingo/Caesars Palace station.
Worth it? Yes.Time it for the 8:30 am feeding, when the birds are active and the paths are empty. By mid-afternoon in summer the flamingos mostly stand in the shade and so will you.

Worth it? Yes.Come on a weekday morning or you will be looking at stopped machines. The garden is the better half. The famous December lights are no longer a free visit.

Worth it? Yes.The part of Las Vegas that feels like a city people live in. Walk Main Street from Charleston to California Avenue and look down the alleys. It is hot and shadeless at midday in summer.

Worth it? Yes.Walk the blocks around Fremont Street at dusk and ride the Deuce for the rest. The stretch north of the freeway toward the Neon Museum is empty at night, so do that part by bus or car.

Worth it? Depends.It is a photo and nothing else, and the line can run 30 minutes by late morning. Go before 8 am. The people offering to take your picture work for tips, and you can say no and use your own phone.

Worth it? Depends.It looks better in photos than in person, and it is an hour of driving for 20 minutes of looking. Stop if you are driving to or from Los Angeles. Otherwise skip it.

By car. West on Charleston Boulevard, which becomes State Route 159. Red Spring is on Calico Basin Road before the Scenic Drive entrance, the Overlook is about two minutes past the Scenic Drive exit.
Worth it? Depends.A fair taste of the canyon, not a substitute for the loop. If you have a car and a morning, pay for the Scenic Drive. If you only want the view and a short walk, this does it for nothing.

You can walk the crest of the dam from Nevada to Arizona and out onto the Memorial Bridge walkway for the view down onto it, all without a ticket. The visitor center and the tours inside the dam are paid.

How to get there
By car. US-93 south through Boulder City, then Nevada State Route 172 to the dam. Drive across the dam to reach the free Arizona lots, then walk back.
Worth it? Depends.Free only if you park on the Arizona side and skip the tour, and you still spend the gas and half a day. The view from the bridge walkway is the best part and costs nothing. Go early, the concrete is brutal by noon in summer.
