Free museums in Buenos Aires, and when

Three rules cover most of it. National museums and cultural centres, such as Bellas Artes, the Casa Rosada Museum, the ESMA site, Palacio Libertad and the Borges centre, are free or by contribution for everyone. City-run museums charge foreigners AR$ 10,000 to AR$ 16,000 and keep their free Wednesday for residents, with one exception, the Museo Moderno, free to all on Wednesdays and the last Sunday of the month. Private museums such as MALBA are never free. Most museums close on Monday or Tuesday.

The city's modern art museum fills a former tobacco warehouse in San Telmo with four floors of Argentine and international work from the 1940s to now. Entry is free for everyone on Wednesdays and on the last Sunday of each month.

Free when: Every Wednesday 11:00–19:00, and the last Sunday of the month 11:00–20:00. Closed Tuesdays. Closed 1 January, Good Friday, 1 May, 11 November, 24, 25 and 31 December.

Reservation: Not needed. You can reserve a slot on the museum site if you want to be sure.

How to get there: Bus 29, 126, 130 or 152 to Av. San Juan and Defensa, or Subte C to San Juan and 10 minutes on foot. Av. San Juan 350

Worth it? Yes.Foreign visitors pay AR$ 16,000 on other days, so Wednesday is the day. There is a public guided walk at 16:00 with no booking. On the free last Sunday it shares the neighbourhood with the San Telmo fair, which makes for a full day.

The most ornate building in Buenos Aires was built in the 1880s to hide twelve water tanks. Its facade is covered in thousands of glazed terracotta pieces, and the small museum on the first floor lets you see the iron structure and a collection of antique taps, pipes and toilets.

Free when: Every Wednesday that is a working day, 10:00–16:00, last entry 15:30. Guided visit in Spanish at 11:00. Closed weekends and public holidays.

How to get there: Subte D to Callao or Facultad de Medicina. Enter at Riobamba 750 and go up to the first floor

Worth it? Yes.The outside is free every day and is the main thing. Go in on a Wednesday to see how a palace was wrapped around a water depot. On other weekdays foreigners pay AR$ 6,300, which is steep for four rooms.

The museums run by the city government waive their fee on Wednesdays, but only for people who live in Argentina. The group includes the Larreta house with its Andalusian garden, the Sívori by the Rosedal, the Fernández Blanco colonial collection, the Quinquela Martín museum in La Boca and the Carlos Gardel house.

Worth it? Yes.Many guides still call this a free day for everyone. It is not. A foreign visitor pays AR$ 10,000 per museum whatever the day, so pick one. The Larreta, for its garden, is the one worth paying for.

A former Franciscan convent beside the cemetery, with around 27 rooms of contemporary art, a cinema and a terrace where teenagers rehearse dance routines. It was free for all until the city began charging visitors from abroad.

Worth it? Yes.If you live in Argentina, walk in. If not, the fee is AR$ 6,000, and it is fair value only when a show interests you. The painted facade and the square in front are free to everyone.

Behind the presidential palace, in the brick vaults of the old fort and customs house, this museum runs through 200 years of Argentine presidents. Its best piece is a mural: the room that David Alfaro Siqueiros painted floor to ceiling in 1933, moved here whole.

Worth it? Yes.The easiest free museum in the centre and rarely busy. Head for the Siqueiros room first, in the Patio de Maniobras, then walk the vaults.

The former officers' club of the Navy Mechanics School, where around 5,000 people were held and tortured during the 1976–83 dictatorship. The building is kept as it was found and is on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Worth it? Yes.Hard to visit and the most important museum in the city for understanding modern Argentina. Take the English audio guide and allow two full hours. Do not plan anything cheerful straight after.

Centro Cultural Borges and the Galerías Pacífico dome

A national arts centre on the upper floors of the Galerías Pacífico building, with rotating exhibitions of photography, painting and print. On the way in, stop under the mall's central dome, painted in 1946 by five Argentine muralists including Antonio Berni.

Worth it? Yes.A useful rainy-afternoon stop in the centre, and open until 21:00. The quality depends on what is showing, so glance at the programme before making a detour.

The country's main art museum and the largest public collection in Latin America. European rooms with Goya, Rembrandt, Rodin, Manet, Van Gogh and Degas are on the ground floor, and Argentine art from the 19th century to today is upstairs.

Worth it? Yes.The best museum in the city for what it asks. Give the ground floor an hour, then go up for Cándido López's panoramas of the Paraguayan War, painted with his left hand after he lost the right.

Teatro Colón guided tour

The Colón is one of the great opera houses of the world and there is no free way to see the inside. The guided tour takes you into the horseshoe auditorium, the Golden Hall and the foyer. Book it on the theatre site a few days ahead, since the English-language slots sell out first.
