Free museums in Barcelona, and when

Three rules cover almost everything. City-run museums (MUHBA, Marès, Montjuïc Castle, the Botanical Garden, Pedralbes) are free every Sunday from 15:00 and all day on the first Sunday of the month. MNAC is free on Saturday from 15:00, MACBA on Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 18:00. The Museu Picasso, MNAC and Palau Güell make you book the free ticket online, and Picasso's are gone within minutes of release.

A thousand years of Catalan art in the palace above Plaça d'Espanya. The Romanesque church murals, lifted whole from Pyrenean valleys, are the reason to come.

Worth it? Yes.The best free museum slot in the city. In winter you only get three hours, so head straight to the Romanesque rooms and leave the rest.

Worth it? Yes.Set an alarm for 10:00 four days ahead, because turning up without a ticket gets you nowhere. Do not expect Guernica-era work. This is the young Picasso.

Worth it? Yes.Ninety minutes is about right for this collection, so the evening slot fits well. If conceptual art leaves you cold, watch the skaters outside for free instead.

Worth it? Yes.The quietest cloister in Barcelona and nobody you know has been. In winter the Sunday window is short, so be at the door by 15:00.
